Bal Panchayat (Children Council)
Bal Panchayat (Children Council)
We aim to organize around 500 children to participate in this council. The idea of Bal Panchayat is for, Children should be motivated to think objectively and critically at an early age. They should be capable of thinking about their own personality development while in school – and see big dreams. For this purpose, children’s council groups organize discussions among the children and with the adults too. A Series of such consultations are arranged for them. We try to increase their self-confidence and inquisitiveness and make them think about everything through various meetings and discussions. And strive to cultivate their leadership qualities. It helps children to study well, and we also expect the students to help others who fall behind in their studies. At the same time, we motivate them to think a little about school and the village as well.
Our Intervention
SEDT has developed the concept of a Children’s Council as “Bal Panchayat.” A group of children between the ages 12-14, in a school which is organized and functions as their council. In each school of these 10 villages, we aim to establish the Bal-Panchayat. It is expected that all children between the ages of 12-14 should participate in this forum. They will elect their representative council, a working group of 12-14 children. This figure can vary as per the number of children in the school. Gender equality will be at the forefront of all activities of Bal-Panchayat. One teacher will be nominated to look after and coordinate with this group. We will request the headmaster of the school that he/she may nominate a teacher to look after the day-to-day activities of this group. And as per our relationship with the schools, the representative teacher will also coordinate with SEDT. This isn’t a new concept; around 6-8 years back, Bal-Panchayat were elected in every school.

The Activities of Balpanchayat
Activities are related to personality development/leadership development.
1. Study circle in each school.
2. Competitions in different subjects.
3. Workshops on Participation, expression, thinking, etc.
4. Regular meetings and discussions in schools In addition to their own development, it’s been experienced that Bal Panchayats have become the best media to motivate parents and village youths-politicians to participate in education system/child development issues. These groups have proven to be powerful children’s bodies in and out of school to attract the community for better schooling. It’s become easy for SEDT to spread any message to children or to parents in villages through these groups.
