WADI Project

SEDT with the support of NABARD has been working on integrated tribal development through sustainable livelihoods and orchard based farming systems. The project aims to provide support for holistic development of tribal communities with orchard cultivation as the core element.

WADI is is basically is a Gujrati word for orchard. Wadi is an ambitious program - The “Wadi” model of tribal development is holistic in approach addressing production, processing and marketing of the produce and also other needs. The core of the program is “Wadi”. Income generation and developing sustainable income model is the core of the project. However, it also focuses to improve the quality and standard of life of poor tribal families through holistic development approach. The Wadi program is spread in 6 villages covering 550 tribal families in Aundha block of Hingoli district.

The Wadi program has found appropriate to rehabilitate the poor tribal communities and ensure their year round employment and income support to the family.

A plot of one acre is used for cultivation of trees like Mango, Tamarid, guava and local varaities of fruits and shrubs producing saleable yield. The by-product like hardy shrubs and trees fodder, fuel, timber and herbal medicines could be used for fencing and bordering the plantation so as to protect the plantation.

  • Soil conservation
  • Water Resource Management
  • Sustainable Agricuture
  • Micro-enterpresises for landless people
  • Processing and marketing
  • Other auxillary components

In addition to the above, SEDT has been providing support to organize women and form their SHGs. Their capacity building and skill dvelopment is the extension of the said activities. Also other community issues are focused and appropriate interventions are conducted.

Personal health and community health is the other area of work in the project. As part of the holistic approach, the measures have taken to improve the quality of living of the tribal communities. The main emphasis is on health check-up camps and community level awareness campaigns at village level. Major emphasis is also on cultivating vegetables and consumption of nutritional diet, especial increase of its intake in children and women.

Training program for farmers and Wadi families are organized to sensitize and mobilize the tribal on their issues and rights. The project functionaries conduct several activities like individual meets, community meetings, corner meetings and mobilization camps.

In future marketing network avenues for produced crops are going to be developed, so as to build a replicable and sustainable model of project-WADI
